human figure; portrait; Caravaggio, Michelangelo Merisi da, 1573-1610

Description

This is the only known portrait of Caravaggio completed by another artist. It was drawn in Rome by Ottavio Leoni (1578-1630) using à trois crayons--that is in red, black and white chalk--on blue-grey paper, is typical of the many portrait drawings for which Leoni is best known. An important collection of such portrait drawings was assembled by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, Leoni’s principal patron; their subjects represent not only leading Roman families but also artists, men of letters and ordinary citizens. Some 27 of the drawn portraits were gathered into an album (Florence, Bib. Marucelliana), it is not known by whom, but the binding is 18th-century.
